General’s Aide: The History

Aide-de-Camp is a French expression meaning “helper in the military camp.” In the United States Army, Aide-de-Camps are known as General’s Aides, and are appointed to serve general-grade ocers. The position is revered with high esteem. To be considered for the nominative position of a General’s Aide, an individual must be competent in the following categories: performance, timeline, and potential. Prospective candidates must have both impressive evaluations and reputations. Chosen candidates must be trustworthy, top-performing, and reliable. Famously, Alexander Hamilton served as General George Washington’s aide during the Revolutionary War from 1777–1781.

Major Richard Norman “Dick” Jenson (left) served as Aide-de-Camp to Gen. George S. Patton during World War II. Said to have been one of Patton’s favorite aides, Jenson was killed in battle at the age of 27 in Tunisia.
