The term started in the 1970s in California by a group of high schoolers called “The Waldos.” Every day after school at 4:20, they would meet up to search for a rumored abandoned cannabis crop somewhere in their town. They never found the loot, but “4:20” turned into a code for lighting up.

This slang spread until it was picked up by the Grateful Dead, who took the phrase across the country with them.
